Shucked is a passion project fueled by my lifelong love of oysters. As a New England native, I grew up in a seafood-obsessed family, shucking and slurping shellfish at every opportunity, but in college I realized many of my peers weren’t sold. Raw, slimy, “only for fancy people”? They had it all wrong. So I set out to change that.
Consider this book dedicated to my college friends: the oyster skeptics.

Oysters deserve a better representative. They’re incredibly versatile in the kitchen and play a vital role in ocean conservation and seafood sustainability. Shucked challenges the stuffy, high-end seafood stereotype with a bold, playful approach that makes oysters feel fun, social, and approachable, especially for a younger audience.

The foundation for Shucked's visual identity was laid with Black Pearl, a custom display typeface inspired by blackletter forms, mimicking the sharp, rugged edges of oyster shells.

Candid flash photography captures people enjoying oysters together, because oysters are always better with company! These images paired with vibrant colors, textured illustrations, and the book’s cheeky voice (“Let’s Shuck,” “Like it Raw?”) invites curious, adventurous eaters to dive in.
The book is divided into two parts: education and execution. First, readers learn the history, environmental impact, varieties, and prep basics. Then, they put it all into practice with recipes organized by preparation style: raw, baked, grilled, fried, steamed, and more.

Bottom line: oysters aren’t intimidating, exclusive, or one-trick-ponies. They’re for everyone, and Shucked proves it.
